For years, major ultrasound manufacturers—backed by COCIR, the influential trade organization representing the EU medical device industry—have relied on Exemption 14, Annex IV of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive to continue selling their traditional ultrasound devices despite them containing lead far in excess of RoHS standards. Their case for exemption: an alleged lack of viables alternatives. We are confident our CMUT chip-powered Butterfly iQ3 directly dismantles this argument for handheld ultrasound by meeting stringent RoHS environmental standards without exemptions, and still delivering exceptional image quality. Recently, we petitioned the European Commission to revoke this outdated exemption for handheld ultrasound devices. We're advocating for an industry-wide shift towards safer, greener technology and aligning with the EU’s circular economy goals.
